Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Application Uses of Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Hosting

* Run multiple websites on VPS
As long as you have enough resources available you can host number of website on the vps.

* Become a web hosting provider
VPS gives you the opportunity to become a web hosting provider. cPanel or Plesk are comprehensive control panel through which you could start your own web hosting company. A virtual private server gives you the freedom to install third party applications or software of your choice.

* Primary or Secondary Mail or DNS Server
You may already have a linux or windows reseller hosting plan or a full fledge linux windows dedicated web server elsewhere, but what if this goes down for any period of time. A MX server or backup DNS will make your infrastructure more resilient and your domains will continue to resolve and mail won’t bounce. You can install DNS and Mail services into your VPS, including Bind, Postfix, Qmail, Sendmail and more

* Personal Game Server
You will be able to install and run games software into your VPS. cPanel and Plesk control panels now have server support for games softwares.

Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Hosting Containers perform exactly like a stand alone dedicated web server, and has its own users, applications and processes, can be rebooted independently. Its has its own root/administrator access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. VPS hosting is based on the concept of partitions on mainframes that allow dozens of divisions to run multiple applications on the same server with advanced resource scheduling.

Plesk for Windows

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Q. How do I prepare Plesk for migration?

Ans: 1. All Plesk components that you wish to use have to be installed on the destination server. For example if the source server has Postgres or Mailman, these packages must be on the destination server, otherwise these components’ data will not be migrated and you get the list of errors after migration is completed.

2. Plesk license on the destination server also must meet all requirements that exist on the source server.

3. Enable “Server->Mail-> Only use of full POP3/IMAP mail accounts names is allowed”.

4. Configure Mailman on the Server->Set Up Mailman, otherwise mailing lists will not be created during migration.

5. Check that there is enough free disk space to make dump on the source server. It should be the same amount as data size you wish to migrate.
Destination server must contain free disk space at least twice the size of the data being migrated. It is needed to store the dump on the destination server and extract data from it.

6. Make sure that the default MySQL character set is ‘latin1′. This encoding is used by Mysql by default, however if it was redefined in /etc/my.cnf, it is better to switch it back to avoid the problems with database restoration.

Current default characters set can be found with:

# mysql -uadmin -p`cat /etc/psa/.psa.shadow` -e ’status’ | grep characterset
Server characterset: latin1
Db characterset: latin1
Client characterset: latin1
Conn. characterset: latin1

Windows VPS setting SMTP server

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Q. How do I set up my SMTP server?

Ans: When using a Windows VPS, the simplest way to install and configure your SMTP service is from directly within your server.

However, The SMTP does not come installed by default, and must be installed before the service can be used. Upon installation a default configuration is created, which then allows you to configure the service to your particular needs.

The following steps explain how to install SMTP on your server:

1. Firstly, you will need to be connected directly to your server, not via a control panel. You can do so by using a remote connection client such as the one found on most windows machines.

2. Once on your machine, select control panel from the start menu.

3. Select Add or Remove Programs.

4. Select Add/Remove Windows Components from the left hand navigation pane.

5. Within the components list, you will see Application Server, select this and then click Details.

6. Navigate to the Subcomponents of Application Server list, select Internet Information Services (IIS), and then click Details.

7. Under the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) list, select the SMTP Service check box.

8. Now click OK.

9. Finally click Next. At this stage you might be prompted for the Windows Server 2003 CD or the network install path, the path is C:\i386

10. Click Finish, and your SMTP service will now install.

When the install has finished, a default SMTP server configuration will have been created with a message store in C:\Inetpub\Mailroot.

As you will be setting up the SMTP service for the first time, you will need to configure global settings for a SMTP virtual server, as well as settings for individual components of the virtual server. To do this you must be member of the Administrators group on the local computer in order to perform the following procedures.

For security reasons, it is always best practice to log on to the server by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, then use the ‘runas’ command to run IIS Manager as an administrator.

If you are going to adopt this method, At a command prompt, type runas /user:your-admin-account-name “mmc %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc”.

Where/How to configure global SMTP settings:

1. Navigate to within the IIS Manager, expand the local computer and right-click ‘Default SMTP Virtual Server’, then select Properties.

2. Next, simply change the default settings on the property pages as required. If you require information about the individual settings, simply click ‘Help’ for an explanation.

To configure SMTP virtual server components settings:

1. Again from within the IIS Manager, expand local computer, then ‘Default SMTP Virtual Server’ and right-click the individual component which you wish to configure and select Properties.

2. Finally, change the default settings on the property pages as required. Again, for additional information about individual settings, simply click ‘Help’.

Q. Can I run Windows Updates?

Ans: No, there is no need. Windows automatic updates are disabled as standard in a Windows Virtuozzo VPS due to the way in which a VPS is provisioned. All Windows updates are installed automatically and are pre-tested by the Parallels (Virtuozzo developer) to ensure that they do not cause conflicts with Virtuozzo or installed template applications.

Enabling automatic updates will potentially cause problems with a VPS, including preventing a user from logging on, maybe even to the extent of causing the server to become un-usable. It is therefore advised that Windows automatic updates are left disabled. If you require a particular update which is not installed, please log a ticket through the Support Center ticket system.
